Thirteen

Nicole couldn’t put her finger on the last time she felt the intense hurt she had been feeling for the past week. Okay, it was five days ago…but it didn’t hurt less. Five days since she’d seen Riley, and five days since she’d slept. Nicole avoided the bar like the plague, and even though she missed Riley, she didn’t want to fight with her. She didn’t want to hurt any more than she already was, so she avoided any and all contact with the bar owner. Of course, she knew it wasn’t the correct way to go about things, but the thought of even looking at Riley was too much to take.

Nicole’s workload had increased, again, as well as her classes. The easiest way to avoid Riley was to hang back on campus each day when her working day was over, providing extra classes for students who needed help. It was the only thing that had kept her going, but she couldn’t do it forever. She couldn’t escape the woman forever, but for as long as it seemed possible…she would.

We’re over. Nicole held back tears as she focused on the blank tv screen in front of her. She’d known they were over the moment she stepped inside the bar five nights ago but saying it out loud would finalize it. Talking to Riley would leave her with nothing, even though that had already happened. Nicole wasn’t sure why things had hit her so hard, but they had. It wasn’t as though the couple had been together for a significant period of time, but in that time, Nicole felt everything for Riley. She’d fallen for her, foolishly. Nicole was of the belief that love can hit us when we least expect it, but now she was beginning to wish she’d never met Riley Allen.

She just pulled me in and told me what I wanted to hear. Nicole scoffed, anger rising from deep within. Five nights ago, she walked inside Bar Ninety to find her girlfriend wrapped up with another woman. Dancing, holding one another. Way too close for comfort. She wasn’t sure if Riley knew she’d been caught, but Nicole didn’t wait around long enough. She got out while she could, and she didn’t look back.

Although it happened, Nicole couldn’t quite figure out why. Riley had openly vocalized her disgust for her ex-fiancée, so why did she follow suit? Why did Riley do what she did to Nicole? What that was, Nicole wasn’t one-hundred percent certain, but she couldn’t stay and watch. She couldn’t call Riley out on her behavior because she was too close to tears.

Riley had been calling Nicole for the past four days, but the brunette had ended every one of them. Hearing Riley’s voice alone would be too painful, knowing that she would likely have some kind of excuse. A poor one, and one that Nicole wouldn’t believe. Nicole knew that Riley would pull her in with her beautiful words, but that wasn’t what she needed. She needed to move forward and allow the bar owner to do the same.
